An Appetite for God

In the last few months, I’ve been made more and more aware of my desire for God — that there is a deep desire that is often “numbed out” by keeping busy or eating or whatever. None of them are bad things but stopping to allow myself to feel, linger in, and respond out of my desire for God.

As a church, we’re doing a study through the rest of the summer called “Pursuit” where we’re looking at the ways that we can put ourselves in a place of experiencing God. Fasting is what we’re looking at this week and I’ve been challenged to fast. While I won’t share what, if anything, I’m fasting from … I will share what has resounded in my heart — John Piper said it so well in his book on prayer and fasting: “There is an appetite for God, And it can be awakened. I invite you to turn from the dulling effects of food and the dangers of idolatry, and to say with some simple fast: ‘This much, O God, I want you.'”

O Father – that I would desire you more than anything else in this world … I long to be stripped of all else but You.
