India, part 3

Wow. I don’t know what to say or how to describe what I’ve seen today. We just got back from a boat ride on the Ganges and a tour of the streets of Varanasi – the center of Hinduism in the world.

Hinduium claims that there are more than 33 million gods/godesses in the universe and that there are three main ones: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. People can be freed from the cycle of reincarnation if they die in Varanasi and/or if they bathe in the Ganges. Just showing up in the city of Varanasi wipes away 50% of your sins/bad karma and bathing in the Ganges wipes away the other 50%. There are over 100,000 Hindu temples in the city to all the different gods. It is hard to describe the feeling of desperation and hopelessness among the people. We also saw the crematoriums where people are cremated on the banks of the Ganges.

Our tour guide had  a PhD in archaeology and was very knowledgeable about Hinduism and I asked him a lot of questions about how you can know if you are enlightened or how you can know anything & he had no answers. It was sad for sure.

I shared yesterday that we tend to glamorize Eastern religion in hte West but when you see it — it is quite hopeless and endless cycles of rituals.

I am so thankful that we can know Christ and have confidence and hope in Him. I now know more than ever why it is so important to be doing ministry here.
