India, part two

Now in Varanasi which is the center of 3 world religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It is intensely interesting and there is a lot of darkness here. To see how spiritual darkness keeps people oppressed is very sad. In the West, Eastern religion gets to glamorized but when you see the effects up close – it’s not so peaceful and/or innocent.

We learned about literacy projects and how the gospel is spreading through teaching people how to read. India is the most illiterate country on earth – 34% of the world’s illiterate live in India. 70% of India is rural and 72% of those people can’t read. We talked to a lady tonight who came to know Christ and wanted desperately to read so that she could read the Bible … she also, after learning to read, was able to start a business. She now makes 500 rupees a month which is about $10 but is better than the $0 that she used to make.

We had an amazing time tonight listening to a lecture from a former Muslim about Islam. He has most of the Quran memorized and could quote from it as well as the Bible to make his point. Simply amazing to hear him and his heart.

Tomorrow we go for a boat tour of the Ganges at sunrise. Will share more soon.

By the way – the food here is amazing!
